My Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Earlier this year, I published Returning to Grace: A Pastoral Letter on the Eucharist. In this letter, I offered some thoughts on the meaning of the Eucharist and its central place in our lives. I also tried to address in positive, hope-filled ways the challenges we face as we emerge from the scourge of the COVID-19 pandemic and the many spiritual, social, physical and financial hardships it imposed on our people, our society and our Church.

All of us—clergy, religious and lay faithful—have a responsibility to invite and encourage our fellow Catholics to return to the grace of the Eucharist. I see this as a stewardship responsibility, an opportunity “to serve one another as good stewards of God's varied grace" (1 Pt 4:10).

To help raise awareness about the importance of Christian stewardship in our daily lives and in our pastoral ministry, I have written a “pastoral reflection” entitled Stewards of God’s Grace that contains ideas first proposed by the American bishops in the 1992 pastoral letter Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response. My reflections on stewardship are intended to reinforce the ideas contained in Returning to Grace, my pastoral letter on the Eucharist. Returning to the grace of the Eucharist provides us with new opportunities to invite all our sisters and brothers in northern New Jersey to discover the richness and joy of life in Christ. Christian discipleship compels us to be good stewards of all God’s gifts, especially our Lord’s gift of Himself in the Holy Eucharist. As individuals, families, parishes and as a diocese, may we use this opportunity to renew our commitment to the spirituality of stewardship as a way of encouraging full participation in the Eucharistic Mystery.

Mis queridas hermanas y hermanos en Cristo:

A principios de este año, publiqué Volviendo a la Gracia: una Carta Pastoral sobre la Eucaristía. En esta carta, ofrecí algunas reflexiones sobre el significado de la Eucaristía y su lugar central en nuestras vidas. También traté de abordar de manera positiva y llena de esperanza los desafíos que enfrentamos a medida que salimos del flagelo de la pandemia del COVID-19 y las muchas dificultades espirituales, sociales, físicas y financieras que impuso a nuestra gente, a nuestra sociedad y a nuestra Iglesia.

Todos nosotros, clérigos, religiosos y fieles laicos, tenemos la responsabilidad de invitar y animar a nuestros compañeros católicos a regresar a la Gracia de la Eucaristía. Veo esto como una responsabilidad de mayordomía, una oportunidad de “servirnos unos a otros como buenos administradores de la variada gracia de Dios” (1 Pedro 4:10).

Para ayudar a crear conciencia sobre la importancia de la corresponsabilidad cristiana en nuestra vida diaria y en nuestro ministerio pastoral, he escrito una “reflexión pastoral” titulada Corresponsables de la Gracia de Dios que contiene ideas propuestas por primera vez por los Obispos estadounidenses en la carta pastoral de 1992 Corresponsabilidad: Una Respuesta del Discípulo. Volver a la Gracia de la Eucaristía nos brinda nuevas oportunidades para invitar a todas nuestras hermanas y hermanos del norte de Nueva Jersey a descubrir la riqueza y el gozo de la vida en Cristo. El discipulado cristiano nos obliga a ser buenos administradores de todos los dones de Dios, especialmente del don que nuestro Señor hizo de Sí mismo en la Sagrada Eucaristía. Como individuos, familias, parroquias y como diócesis, aprovechemos esta oportunidad para renovar nuestro compromiso con la espiritualidad de la corresponsabilidad como una forma de fomentar la participación plena en el Misterio Eucarístico.
