Archdiocesan parishes give $367K for Religious Retirement Fund

The parish communities of the Archdiocese of Newark donated $367,435 to the 2022 Retirement Fund for Religious collection, according to the National Religious Retirement Office (NRRO).

In a letter to Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., NRRO Executive Director Sister Stephanie Still, PBVM expressed “heartfelt gratitude” to parishioners in northern New Jersey for their continuing support of senior religious and their communities. She wrote, “I offer a daily prayer of thanksgiving for all whose love and sacrifice make the work of our office possible.”

According to the letter, since the collection was launched in 1988, the Archdiocese of Newark’s parishes have contributed a total of $22,202,305.57 to help religious communities care for senior members.  The collection helps the organization to provide financial and educational assistance to more than 270 religious communities, who aid older members while continuing to serve the People of God. Additionally, proceeds offer vital support for medications, nursing care, and other daily necessities. A portion of the collection also supports programming and education that promote long-term retirement planning.

Sister Patricia Wormann, Delegate for Religious Archdiocese of Newark, said the archdiocese is grateful for the support shown to our aging Religious Sisters, Brothers, and Priests.

“Many of the communities that have members in our own archdiocese have been recipients of funding to assist them,” Sister Wormann said. “Be assured that they hold each of you in their prayers and thank you for your generosity.”

Approximately 30,000 elderly sisters, brothers, and religious order priests benefit from the annual collection.  “These resources focus on helping communities to reduce costs, enhance eldercare, and identity additional sources of income,” the letter said.
