About the Archdiocese of Newark

The Archdiocese of Newark serves approximately 1.3 million Catholics in northern New Jersey through faith, education, and social services, and encompasses 212 parishes, 73 primary and secondary Catholic schools, and numerous ministries within Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Union counties. Established by Pope Pius IX in 1853, the Archdiocese is the ninth largest diocese by Catholic population in the United States, and is led by Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., who was installed as the sixth Archbishop of Newark on January 6, 2017.

The Archdiocese of Newark is called to share in the saving mission of Jesus Christ and to be living witnesses of Christ’s presence and His ongoing mission in our society. The Church in the Archdiocese of Newark responds to this call  by teaching and witnessing the Word of God, building community among His children, and serving whoever is in need every day
